A Dream of Nanke
Have you ever taken an afternoon nap and woken up feeling as though an entire lifetime had passed? While 'A Dream of Nanke' is beloved today as a gentle tale about the fleeting nature of glory, its true history hides a delightfully sharp, hilarious surprise! Penned around 802 CE during China's Tang Dynasty by an official named Li Gongzuo, the story wasn't presented as a fairy tale at all. Li insisted it was a strictly factual biographical account, claiming he had personally interviewed the protagonist—a grumpy, booze-loving retired military officer named Chunyu Fen! Even wilder, the majestic 'Kingdom of the Locust Tree,' complete with royal weddings, grand battles, and haughty ministers, wasn't a mythical paradise: it was literally an ordinary nest of garden ants living under a Sophora tree! Li disguised his satire with authentic imperial ranks, realistic official documents, and real Tang Dynasty geography so masterfully that contemporary scholars thought they were reading a serious historical record—only to discover that the self-important generals and courtiers were just busy little insects running in circles. This biting political parody later entered imperial anthologies, inspired classic Ming Dynasty Kunqu operas, and crossed borders to become a famous idiom across East Asia, reminding us never to take worldly grandeur too seriously.
On a warm afternoon, Chunyu Fen drank wine and chatted with his friends in the courtyard. A gentle breeze blew through the garden, carrying the fresh scent of leaves as laughter filled the air.
Feeling drowsy from the wine, Chunyu Fen wandered over to a magnificent, leafy locust tree. Leaning against its wide trunk, he closed his eyes and drifted into a deep sleep.
In his sleep, Chunyu Fen saw two messengers in fine purple robes approaching on tall steeds. They bowed politely to him, escorting a splendid golden carriage that shimmered in the light.
The messengers explained that their king had sent them to escort him. Filled with curiosity, Chunyu Fen stepped inside, and the carriage plunged straight into a hidden hollow within the tree trunk.
Passing through the hollow, Chunyu Fen emerged into a breathtaking world: the magnificent Kingdom of the Locust Tree. Grand palaces stretched across the horizon, and lively streets bustled with happy citizens.
Guided by the heralds, Chunyu Fen walked into the dazzling imperial court. High upon his throne sat the grand king, who welcomed his guest with open arms and warm hospitality.
Admiring Chunyu Fen's talents and character, the king offered his beloved daughter's hand in marriage. Chunyu Fen accepted with deep gratitude and joy.
The palace hosted a grand wedding celebration in their honor. Delightful music echoed through the halls as graceful dancers performed, filling the entire royal court with cheerful laughter.
Soon after their marriage, the king appointed Chunyu Fen as the Governor of the Southern Branch. He traveled to the province with his bride, determined to serve the land faithfully.
Chunyu Fen ruled with fairness and compassion, lowering taxes and improving the people's livelihoods. Under his gentle guidance, the region flourished, and the citizens deeply loved their new governor.
For twenty peaceful years, Chunyu Fen governed the Southern Branch in prosperity. Then suddenly, enemy troops launched a fierce invasion, lighting signal fires along the borders and shattering the calm.
The unexpected war threw the province into chaos and fear. Facing ruthless invaders and an unfolding crisis, Chunyu Fen had to stand firm against the greatest trial of his rule.
After the battles subsided, Chunyu Fen's beloved princess fell gravely ill and soon passed away. Heartbroken and overwhelmed with sorrow, he wept every day.
Seeing him so crestfallen, the king sent word: "Your time here has come to an end. It is time for you to return home." With a heavy heart, Chunyu Fen bid farewell to the kingdom.
Chunyu Fen awoke with a sudden start, finding himself still lying on the bamboo mat beneath the locust tree.
A gentle breeze blew, and the afternoon sun had barely shifted in the sky. Nearby, his friends were still laughing and chatting, the remaining wine in their cups not yet dry. The whole lifetime he had lived was nothing more than a brief midday nap.
Filled with wonder, Chunyu Fen took a small tool and gently dug into the ground beneath the southern bough of the tree.
Hidden deep among the roots was an enormous, intricate anthill! Little mounds and tunnels crisscrossed like bustling castles, with countless ants scurrying to and fro. Every chamber and pathway perfectly mirrored the grand kingdom he had seen in his dream.
Gazing at the busy ants, Chunyu Fen had a sudden moment of clarity. He understood that earthly fame, fortune, and grandeur could vanish like mist, passing just like a dream.
From that day forward, he let go of his longing for power and wealth. Instead, he chose to cherish his dear companions and embrace a peaceful life, savoring the true and simple joys of each day.
