The Gourd That Was Too Big to Use?
The Gourd That Was Too Big to Use?
Did you know that the saying "too big to be useful" comes from a 2,300-year-old argument about a giant gourd? In the time of Zhuangzi, a man named Hui Shi grew a gourd so huge that he couldn't use it for anything—it was too big for a water container and too heavy for a ladle. But Zhuangzi laughed and said, "Why not tie it to your waist and float on the rivers?" The "useless" gourd became a symbol of creative freedom! This story shows that what seems useless might just be waiting for a clever idea.
During the Warring States period, there lived a thinker named Hui Shi. He was clever and practical, but sometimes he lacked imagination. One day, the King of Wei gave him a giant gourd seed and said, "This seed can grow an extraordinary gourd. Plant it well." Hui Shi took the seed and thought, "It's just a seed. How special can it be?" But he still dug a hole in his courtyard, carefully tucked the seed into the soil, and tended it every day with water and fertilizer. Days passed, the seed sprouted, and tender green leaves slowly grew. Hui Shi watched it, his heart full of hope.
Several months later, a gourd grew on the vine. It grew bigger and bigger, until at last it was taller than Hui Shi himself and thicker than a water jar. Hui Shi's eyes went wide. "I've never seen such a huge gourd!" he gasped. "It's a miracle!" He walked around it several times and touched its smooth skin, amazed and puzzled. He thought, "What on earth can I use such a big gourd for? A normal gourd can hold water or be made into a ladle, but this one is so big—how should I use it?" He frowned and began to scratch his head.
First, Hui Shi thought of using it to hold water. With enormous effort, he hauled the gourd to the riverbank and filled it with water. But the gourd was too heavy—he couldn't move it at all. Then, with a slip, the gourd fell to the ground and cracked open, and the water gushed out everywhere. Hui Shi sighed and thought, "Maybe I can cut it in half and make a ladle for scooping water." He fetched a saw and tried to cut the gourd in two, but it was far too big. He sawed and sawed and still couldn't get through. And even if he had, what water jar could hold such a giant ladle? Hui Shi tried and tried, but he couldn't find a good use for it. He sat on the ground in dismay, staring blankly at the enormous gourd.
The more Hui Shi thought about it, the more upset he became, so he went to see his good friend Zhuangzi. As soon as he saw him, he couldn't help complaining: "Zhuangzi, I got a giant gourd. I thought it was a treasure, but it's big and useless! If I use it to hold water, it's too heavy and it cracks. If I make it into a ladle, it's too big to put anywhere. This gourd is so huge, yet it can't do anything at all. Doesn't that make you angry?" Hui Shi shook his head and sighed as he spoke, his face full of frustration. Zhuangzi listened quietly, a little smile at the corner of his mouth. He didn't answer right away. Instead, he looked at Hui Shi thoughtfully.
Zhuangzi smiled warmly and asked, "Huishi, have you ever thought of using it in a different way? Why not tie it around your waist and float freely on the rivers and lakes?" Huishi was stunned—he had never considered such a use. Zhuangzi continued, "You always think of the gourd's traditional purpose, but you forget it can serve other ends. Such a big gourd, floating on water—isn't it like a natural life buoy? You could lie on it, drift leisurely, and enjoy the scenery on both banks. Isn't that fun?" As Huishi listened, his eyes gradually lit up, and he began to picture that scene.
Huishi looked at Zhuangzi in amazement and said, "Why didn't I ever think of that? I only thought of using it to hold water or as a ladle, but never as a floating tool." Zhuangzi nodded and said, "The usefulness of things often depends on our imagination, not on conventional purposes. You think it's useless because you're bound by traditional thinking. Actually, just change your perspective, and you'll discover its value." Huishi suddenly understood. He looked at Zhuangzi with admiration, his heart filled with new ideas. He decided to try this novel idea right away.
Huishi excitedly carried the huge gourd to the riverbank. He found a rope, tied the gourd securely around his waist, and carefully stepped into the river. The water was clear and cool. As soon as the gourd touched the water, it floated steadily, holding Huishi up on the surface. At first, Huishi was a little nervous, but soon he found he could float easily and even paddle forward. He couldn't help but laugh out loud, his laughter echoing over the river. He had never been so happy—this big gourd was so useful! He swam around excitedly in the river like a child.
After swimming for a while, Huishi returned to the shore and said to Zhuangzi, panting, "Zhuangzi, you are truly my good teacher and friend! I used to think this gourd was completely useless, but now I understand—it was just waiting for a creative mind. Thank you for opening my eyes!" Zhuangzi smiled and said, "No need to thank me. You were willing to try something new. Remember, 'useless' often just means we haven't yet discovered its use." Huishi nodded again and again. He looked at the gourd around his waist, his heart full of gratitude and joy. He decided to be more open-minded about things from then on.
The sun was setting, and golden light sparkled on the river. Huishi and Zhuangzi sat side by side on the bank, a gentle breeze blowing. Huishi sighed and said, 'I used to be so short-sighted, only seeing the traditional use of the gourd and missing its potential. Now I understand: "useless" depends on your point of view. The same gourd, from a different angle, turns from waste into treasure.' Zhuangzi nodded and smiled. The two quietly watched the sun go down, their hearts full of peace and wisdom.
This story has been passed down, and people use 'big but useless' to describe things that seem huge but impractical. But Huishi's experience tells us that so-called 'uselessness' might just mean we haven't found its use yet. Just like that giant gourd, it eventually became a symbol of freedom and creativity. As long as we are willing to step outside conventional thinking, we can discover unexpected value in seemingly useless things. Remember, change your angle, and the world is different.
