Nezha Battles the Sea
A magical boy with a cosmic ring and red sash takes on the Dragon King of the sea! This is the thrilling tale of 哪吒鬧海.
Long ago, beside the shining sea, a wonderful boy named Nezha lived with his family. He was born with a brave heart and unusual strength. Around his arm he wore the Red Armillary Sash, which could fly like a ribbon. At his feet were magic wheels, and in his hand he carried the powerful Universe Ring. Nezha loved helping villagers, but he also loved splashing and playing. One sunny morning, he ran toward the waves, ready for an adventure.
Nezha leaped across the water, laughing as his magic wheels skimmed the waves. He twirled the Red Armillary Sash, making sparkling circles in the air. The waves rose higher and higher, and the sea wind rushed into the Dragon King’s palace below. Cups trembled, curtains fluttered, and sleepy sea creatures woke with a start. Nezha did not mean to cause trouble. He thought the waves were only playing with him. But deep beneath the sea, someone was not amused.
The Dragon King sent his sea soldiers upward. Their leader, a young dragon prince, shouted, “Stop that noisy child!” The soldiers surrounded Nezha with nets made of seaweed and pearls. Nezha felt a little frightened, but he remembered to breathe slowly. “I am playing,” he explained. “I did not know I was disturbing anyone.” The soldiers would not listen. They rushed forward, so Nezha lifted his Universe Ring and stood ready, determined to protect himself without hurting anyone.
With a bright flash, Nezha spun the Universe Ring. The nets flew harmlessly into the water, and the soldiers tumbled backward like leaves in a breeze. He used the Red Armillary Sash to gently tie their spears together. No one was hurt, but everyone stopped fighting. The young dragon prince stared in surprise. Nezha lowered his weapons and said, “Let us talk. If I made a mistake, I will listen.” The soldiers hurried back to the palace to report what had happened.
The Dragon King sat upon a shell throne, his face dark with anger. “That boy has challenged my palace,” he declared. “He must be punished!” He ordered the sea to rise against the villages. Hearing this, Nezha saw frightened fishermen rushing home. Children clung to their parents, and boats rocked near the shore. Nezha’s heart felt heavy. He had been having fun, but his careless play had disturbed many people. He knew he could not hide or blame someone else.
Nezha flew to the highest rock and looked at the rising water. “This began with my mistake,” he said. “I must make it right.” His friends begged him to stay safe, but Nezha shook his head. “Being brave does not mean never feeling afraid. It means doing what is right even when fear is near.” He gathered his magic weapons and flew toward the Dragon King’s palace. Along the shore, the villagers watched hopefully as he disappeared into the mist.
At the palace gates, Nezha faced the Dragon King. “I am sorry that my play disturbed your home,” he said. “But please stop the rising water. The villagers are innocent.” The Dragon King thundered, “You must bow and accept punishment!” Nezha stood straight. “I will accept responsibility for my mistake, but I will not let innocent people suffer.” He placed his Universe Ring on the ground and held his Red Armillary Sash high, showing that he had come to speak with courage.
The Dragon King sent a great wave toward Nezha, but Nezha did not attack. He guided the wave around the palace with his Red Armillary Sash, turning its force into a calm stream. Then he used the Universe Ring to make a shining circle that held the water safely. The Dragon King watched in silence. Nezha said, “Power should protect people, not frighten them. I made a mistake, and I am fixing it. You can choose to do the same.”
The Dragon King looked from the shining circle to the distant shore. He saw families waiting, boats pulled to safety, and children hoping to see the sun again. His anger began to fade. “You are right,” he admitted. “I should not punish innocent people because I am angry.” He raised his hand, and the sea slowly became quiet. Then he promised, “I will never flood these shores or harm their people again.” Nezha bowed, grateful that the Dragon King had chosen fairness.
Nezha returned to the village as the clouds opened and sunlight poured across the calm sea. The villagers cheered, but Nezha quietly thanked his friends and apologized for the trouble he had caused. From that day on, he played carefully and always noticed how his actions affected others. Whenever someone needed help, he raced forward with his magic wheels. Nezha learned that true courage means admitting mistakes, making them right, and protecting people who cannot protect themselves.
