The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs
Can a goose really lay golden eggs?
Did you know? In ancient Greece, people believed gold was made from the tears of the gods. The 'golden egg' in Aesop's fables is really a symbol of wealth, and the goose stands for nature's generous gifts. This story has been passed down for more than two thousand years, reminding us that greed often destroys the steady happiness we already have.
In a small village far away, there lived a poor husband and wife. Every day the husband rose before dawn and worked hard in the fields, while the wife stayed home busy sweeping, washing clothes, and cooking. They lived in a simple farmhouse with holes in the roof and stained, crumbling walls. Though they worked from morning till night, they could barely keep from going hungry. Sometimes they had only thin porridge and wild vegetables, and could not even spare a coin for a piece of meat. The husband often sighed, 'Oh, when will these hard days ever end?' The wife always comforted him gently, 'Don't worry. As long as we keep trying, good days will surely come.' They were poor, but they supported each other, and life went on well enough.
Though life was hard, the couple kept a white goose. Her feathers were pure white and plump, her eyes gentle, and she was very lovable. They were not rich, but they loved this goose dearly and always saved the best grain for her to eat. Every morning the wife would feed the goose first, gently stroking her feathers and saying, 'Good goose, eat a little more and grow nice and plump.' When the husband came home from work, he would bring fresh grass for the goose to eat. The white goose always waddled around them, making soft sounds, as if thanking them for their care. The couple had no children, but this goose was like their child, bringing them much joy.
One morning, the wife went to the goose nest as usual to feed her, and found a shiny, glowing golden egg in the nest! She cried out in astonishment, 'Husband! Come quick and see what this is!' The husband ran over, and he was stunned too when he saw the golden egg. He carefully picked it up and looked at it closely; the egg was heavy and gave off a dazzling light. The couple were both amazed and overjoyed, hardly able to believe their eyes. The wife said excitedly, 'Our goose must have laid this! We're going to be rich!' The husband grinned from ear to ear, 'Wonderful! Now we can live a good life!' They held the golden egg in their palms, looking at it again and again, their hearts full of hope.
The couple decided to take the golden egg to the market to sell. The market was bustling with people coming and going. They found a merchant who bought gold, and the moment he saw the golden egg, his eyes lit up, and he gave them a large sum of money at once. With that money, the couple bought plenty of food and household goods: rice, flour, oil, salt, new clothes, new blankets, and even some tools to repair their house. They carried big bags and small bundles home, happier than words could say. The wife laughed, 'We can finally eat our fill!' The husband said with feeling, 'We owe it all to our white goose!' From that day on, their life began to improve, and they no longer suffered from hunger and cold.
The next morning, the wife went to check the goose's nest again. Sure enough, the white goose had laid another golden egg! The couple was overjoyed. They began to look forward to a golden egg every day. The husband said, "If we get one golden egg every day, we will soon be rich!" The wife said hopefully, "Yes, we will never have to worry about our life again." They treated the white goose even more tenderly. They gave it a cozier nest and fed it finer food. The white goose seemed to feel their joy too, and it laid an egg on time every day. Every morning, the couple's first task was to collect the golden egg, and it became their happiest moment.
As the days passed, the couple grew richer and richer. They sold the golden eggs and gained more and more wealth. They built a new house, bought land, and filled it with many pieces of furniture. However, as their wealth grew, their hearts changed too. The husband no longer worked hard as he used to. All day long, he thought about how to get more golden eggs. The wife also became greedy, always thinking about buying more expensive things. They no longer loved the white goose as before. They treated it only as a tool for making money. Sometimes they even complained, "Why only one golden egg a day? If only it could lay a few more!" The seed of greed quietly sprouted in their hearts.
One day, the husband sat in their new house and thought to himself, "The goose's belly must hold more gold. Why not take it all out at once?" The more he thought, the more reasonable it seemed. So he said to his wife, "We can only get one golden egg a day. That is too slow. Let's kill the goose and take all the gold from its belly. Then we can become very rich at once!" At first, the wife hesitated a little, but under her husband's urging, she also thought it was a good idea. She thought, "The goose has already laid so many golden eggs. There must be a lot of gold in its belly." So they decided to do it the next day.
The next day, the couple ignored the white goose's sad cries and cruelly killed it. The white goose let out a sorrowful call. Its eyes were full of fear and confusion, but they paid no attention. They could not wait to cut open the goose's belly, only to find that inside there were just ordinary organs. There was not a bit of gold. The couple was stunned. They could not believe their eyes. The husband searched with trembling hands, but found nothing. The wife sat on the ground and cried, "How could this happen? Where are our golden eggs?" Only then did they understand that there had never been any gold in the goose's belly. The golden eggs were laid by the goose through its hard work each day. They regretted it deeply, but it was already too late.
The couple had lost their daily golden egg, and they had also lost their beloved white goose. They sat beside the empty goose nest, tears streaming down their faces. The husband beat his chest and stamped his feet, saying regretfully, "It's all because I was too greedy! Why did I kill it?" The wife also cried and said, "We could have lived peaceful days every day, but now everything is gone." They thought back to the old times when they were poor but happy. Back then, they loved the white goose, and the white goose brought them hope. Now, because of a moment of greed, they had destroyed their own happiness with their own hands. They finally understood that greed can make people lose the happiness they originally had.
From then on, the couple returned to a poor life, but this time their hearts were filled with regret. They often sat in front of the farmhouse, staring blankly at the empty goose nest. When the villagers heard their story, they all shook their heads and sighed. Some said, "That's what greed leads to!" The couple also deeply realized: greed can make people lose the happiness they originally had, and only contentment brings lasting joy. They no longer complained about the hardships of life, but worked hard and cherished everything in front of them. Although their days were simple, they learned to be content, and their hearts felt more peaceful. This story also spread through the village, reminding people not to repeat their mistakes.
