The Bremen Town Musicians (Or So They Thought)
Did the Bremen Town Musicians Ever Actually Make It to Bremen?
Did you know? In the Grimm fairy tale, the four animals set out to become town musicians in Bremen—but by the end of the story, they never even set foot inside the city! They found a robber's cottage halfway there and decided to stay. So the 'Bremen Town Musicians' are really 'the band headed toward Bremen'—their musical dream came true right there in the forest!
Long, long ago, there was a quiet old farm, and on that farm lived an old donkey. When the donkey was young, he was very strong. Every day he pulled a heavy millstone, turning it round and round from morning till night without rest. But now he was old. Though still big and sturdy, his movements had grown slow, and he walked step by step, as slowly as if counting pebbles on the ground. The farmer looked at him, frowned, and thought to himself: This donkey can't work anymore. Keeping him is just a waste of feed—better to get rid of him. The donkey was slow, but his ears were sharp. He heard the farmer's plan and felt both sad and scared. He thought for a long time, then finally lifted his head and said to himself, 'I may be old, but I still have a voice! I'll run away to Bremen and become a musician in a band!' So, under the cover of night, he quietly left the farm and set off on the road to Bremen.
The donkey walked slowly along a country path. Wild grass grew thick on both sides, and when the wind blew, the blades rustled. As he walked, he saw an old hunting dog sitting by the roadside, head down and sighing. The donkey stopped and asked, 'Friend, why are you so sad?' The old dog looked up and said in a low voice, 'I'm getting old. My sense of smell isn't sharp anymore, and I can't run fast. My master says I'm useless and wants to send me away.' The donkey felt very sorry for him and said, 'Don't be sad. I'm on my way to Bremen to join a band. Your bark is so loud and clear—why not come with me?' The old dog's eyes lit up. He wagged his tail and said, 'Really? Can I?' The donkey nodded, and the two old friends walked side by side toward Bremen.
The donkey and the dog walked for a while, when suddenly they heard a faint meow from the roadside. They turned to look and saw an old cat crouching under a tree, her eyes sharp but filled with worry. The donkey asked, 'Kitty, what's wrong?' The old cat sighed and said, 'I'm old, my teeth are bad, and I can't catch mice anymore. My master says he's going to drown me.' The dog heard this and said anxiously, 'That won't do!' The donkey thought for a moment and said gently, 'Your meow is so high and sweet—why not join our band and come to Bremen with us?' The old cat lifted her head, turned her eyes this way and that, and thought it was a good idea. She stood up and followed them. The three companions walked along the path. Their steps were slow, but their hearts were full of hope.
As they walked, they came near a farmhouse and suddenly heard a loud crowing. It was an old rooster standing on a fence, crowing at the top of his lungs. The donkey asked curiously, 'Rooster, you're crowing so loudly—what's happened?' The rooster puffed up his bright feathers and said sadly, 'My master says I'm too old and don't crow on time anymore. Tomorrow he's going to make me into soup!' The dog and the cat both felt worried for him. But the donkey smiled and said, 'Don't be afraid. Your crow is so powerful—you can be a member of our band. Come with us to Bremen!' As soon as the rooster heard this, he flapped his wings, jumped down from the fence, and said happily, 'Wonderful! I'd love to!' So the four animals set off together, heading toward Bremen.
The four animals walked together as the sky grew darker and the trees in the forest became thicker and thicker. It was so quiet that they could only hear their own footsteps. They had walked all day, their bellies were hungry, and their legs were tired. They were just looking for a place to rest. Suddenly, the donkey raised his head and saw a faint yellow light flickering among the trees not far away. They crept closer and found a little house in the forest, with a light shining inside and the sound of laughter coming from within. The donkey said in a low voice, "Let's not rush. Let's see who is inside." The four animals huddled by the window and carefully peeked in, their hearts filled with both nervousness and curiosity, wondering what secret this little house might hold.
They lay by the window and looked inside. It turned out that a group of robbers were sitting in the house, gathered around the table eating and drinking heartily. The table was covered with bread, savory meat, and a jug of wine. The robbers were eating and talking loudly, looking fierce and rough. The donkey whispered, "This house is so warm, and there's so much food on the table. If only we could live here." The dog sniffed the air and said quietly, "I have an idea. Let's all four of us think of a plan to chase these robbers away." The cat rolled her sharp eyes, and the rooster nodded. The four animals huddled together, whispering and plotting, determined to give these bad people a good scare.
After making their plan, the four animals sprang into action. The donkey put his front hooves on the windowsill, the dog jumped onto the donkey's back, the cat climbed onto the dog's back, and finally the rooster flew onto the cat's head. The four animals formed a tall pyramid. They took a deep breath and then let out a loud cry together: the donkey brayed "Hee-haw!", the dog barked "Woof woof!", the cat screeched "Meow!", and the rooster crowed "Cock-a-doodle-doo!". The four sounds mixed together, loud and terrifying. When the robbers heard this horrible noise and saw a huge dark shadow at the window, they were scared out of their wits. They screamed and fled out the door, running headlong into the dark night without looking back.
The robbers ran away without a trace, and the little house suddenly became quiet. The four animals jumped in through the window, looked around, and found the house warm and comfortable. The table still had the food the robbers hadn't finished—bread, meat, and wine were all there. The donkey said with a smile, "Friends, we did it! Let's make this food our dinner." The four animals gathered around the table and happily began to eat, eating until their bellies were round and full. After eating, they each found a comfortable place to rest. The donkey lay on the hay, the dog curled up by the door, the cat nestled by the fireplace, and the rooster flew up to the roof beam. They decided that from then on, they would live in this little house.
In the middle of the night, the forest was very quiet. A robber crept back to the little house to see what had happened inside. He pushed the door open softly. It was pitch dark, and he could not see anything. He felt his way to the fireplace and saw two bright, shiny spots. Thinking they were embers, he reached out to touch them. They were the cat's eyes! The cat jumped up and scratched his face hard. The robber cried out in pain and turned to run, but at the door he bumped into the dog, who opened his mouth and bit his leg. He stumbled into the yard, and the donkey gave him a hard kick. The rooster on the roof crowed loudly, "Cock-a-doodle-doo!" The robber was so scared that he crawled away as fast as he could and ran back to his friends.
When the robber got back, his face was pale and he was shaking all over. He said to his friends, "That house is full of terrible monsters! There is a scary creature that scratches, a demon that bites, a giant that kicks, and a ghost on the roof that shouts loudly!" The robbers were terrified and never dared to go back to the little house again. From then on, the four animals lived happily and peacefully in the little house in the forest. They never made it to Bremen, but they formed their own band in the forest. The donkey often said to his friends with a smile, "I may be old, but I still have my voice!" And those words became their happiest secret code.
