The Banana-Leaf Fan
The Fan That Could Stop a Volcano!
Did you know that the Banana-Leaf Fan in Journey to the West is based on a real ancient Chinese belief? People once thought that giant banana leaves could magically cool the earth. In fact, the Flaming Mountains might be inspired by the real Turpan Depression in Xinjiang, one of the hottest places on Earth, where temperatures soar above 50°C! The story turns a harsh desert into a magical challenge, showing how imagination transforms nature's extremes into epic adventures.
Tang Monk and his three disciples traveled west, climbing one high mountain after another. One day, as soon as they reached the foot of a mountain, a wave of heat rushed at their faces. They looked up and saw a sea of fire ahead! The whole Flaming Mountain blazed sky-high, and the red glow burned half the sky crimson. Sun Wukong leaped into the air to look around. He saw flames rolling and thick smoke billowing, and even the rocks were scorched hot. Zhu Bajie wiped the sweat from his head and grumbled, "I'm roasting, old Pig is! This place is a giant steamer!" Sha Wujing carried the luggage, his clothes soaked with sweat. Tang Monk pulled the white horse to a stop and frowned. "Disciples, the Flaming Mountain blocks our way. What shall we do?" Wukong dropped back to the ground, scratched his ear, and said, "Don't worry, Master. Old Sun will go and ask around."
Wukong somersaulted through the air down to a small village at the foot of the mountain and found a white-bearded old grandfather. The old man sighed and said, "This Flaming Mountain has burned for hundreds of years. Ordinary water can't put it out. Only the Banana-Leaf Fan in Princess Iron Fan's hand can smother the great fire with one wave." Wukong's eyes lit up, and he quickly asked, "Where does Princess Iron Fan live?" The old man pointed into the distance. "In the Banana Cave on Emerald Cloud Mountain over there. But she has a fierce temper—she may not agree to lend it." Wukong returned to his master and patted his chest. "Rest easy, Master. Old Sun will go borrow the Banana-Leaf Fan right now!" Tang Monk warned, "Wukong, always treat others with courtesy. Do not be rude." Wukong agreed, leaped onto his somersault cloud, and headed straight for Emerald Cloud Mountain.
Wukong arrived at the Banana Cave on Emerald Cloud Mountain. He straightened his clothes and knocked politely on the door. "Princess Iron Fan, Old Sun pays his respects! The Flaming Mountain blocks our way, and I've come to borrow the Banana-Leaf Fan." The cave door creaked open, and Princess Iron Fan strode out holding a precious sword, furious. The moment she saw Sun Wukong, her eyes turned red. "You wicked monkey! Years ago you subdued my Red Boy and tore mother and son apart, and today you dare come to my door?" Wukong quickly cupped his hands. "Please calm down, madam. That is all in the past. Today I only ask to borrow the fan to put out the fire and help my master cross the mountain." Princess Iron Fan gave a cold laugh. "Borrow my Banana-Leaf Fan? Dream on!" With that, she turned, took out the Banana-Leaf Fan, and gripped it tightly in her hand.
Princess Iron Fan raised the Banana-Leaf Fan and gave Sun Wukong a mighty wave. With a great whoosh, a wild wind rose, sending sand and stones flying. Before Wukong could steady himself, he was swept up into the air and blown away like a leaf. He tumbled through the sky, flying farther and farther, the wind roaring past his ears, unable to stop. After who knew how long, Wukong landed with a thud on a high mountain, seeing stars from the fall. He scrambled up, rubbed his bottom, and gaped in amazement. "What a powerful fan! One wave blew Old Sun this far!" Wukong steadied himself and thought: forcing a loan won't work. I need a clever plan. His eyes rolled, and an idea popped into his head.
Wukong shook himself and turned into a tiny flying bug. Buzz, buzz! He flew straight back to the Banana Cave. Just then, Princess Iron Fan felt thirsty. She picked up a cup of tea to drink. Wukong saw his chance and zoomed right into the cup, hiding in the middle of the tea. Princess Iron Fan didn't notice a thing. She tipped her head back and gulped, gulp, gulp, gulp, and drank it all down. Wukong went with the tea, all the way down into her tummy. Inside, he did somersaults and kicked his legs, making a big fuss. Princess Iron Fan grabbed her belly. It hurt so much she bent over, her face turned pale, and cold sweat dripped down: "Ouch! It hurts so much! What's going on?" Wukong laughed loudly inside her tummy: "Sister-in-law, old Sun is in your belly! If you want to know whether to lend me the fan, you'd better think it over!"
Princess Iron Fan was in so much pain she couldn't stand it. She begged again and again: "Uncle Sun, spare me! I'll lend it, I'll lend it, okay?" Only then did Wukong jump out of her mouth and turn back into himself. Princess Iron Fan rubbed her belly and took a fan out of a cabinet. She handed it to Wukong. Wukong took the fan, gave it a little shake, and happily rode his cloud back to Flaming Mountain. He raised the fan and gave the big fire a mighty fan. But instead of going out, the fire went WHOOSH and blazed even brighter, with flames leaping up high! Wukong was singed and stumbled backward. Then he understood he had been tricked: "That sneaky Princess Iron Fan gave me a fake fan!" He stamped his feet in anger and had to think of another plan.
Wukong knew he couldn't just force his way through. So he rode his cloud up to the sky to ask the gods for help. First he found the Earth God, and then he went to ask the heavenly gods. One god told him: "The husband of Princess Iron Fan is the Bull Demon King. Only the Bull Demon King knows which Banana Fan is real and which is fake. If you can persuade the Bull Demon King, this will be easy." Wukong heard this and slapped his forehead: "Of course! The Bull Demon King and I became sworn brothers long ago!" But then he thought again—the Bull Demon King was still angry with him about the Red Boy business, so he might not want to help. Wukong's eyes twinkled. He smiled and said: "Since I can't borrow it face to face, old Sun will make a disguise and get it with cleverness!"
Wukong shook himself and changed into the shape of the Bull Demon King. He swaggered into the Banana Cave. When Princess Iron Fan saw her "husband" come home, she was surprised and happy. She hurried to bring out the real Banana Fan. Wukong pretended to be the Bull Demon King and said in a rough, gruff voice: "Give the fan to me to keep safe." Princess Iron Fan didn't suspect anything and handed the real fan over. Wukong took the fan, his heart blooming with joy, and turned to leave. But just as he reached the cave entrance, he bumped into the real Bull Demon King! The Bull Demon King saw through him at once and flew into a rage: "You monkey! How dare you pretend to be me!" He raised his big blade to strike. Wukong didn't back down either. He swung his golden cudgel to fight back, and the two of them fought until the sky grew dark and the earth shook.
The Bull Demon King was very powerful, and Wukong could not win alone. Just then, heavenly soldiers and generals came to help, and Guanyin Bodhisattva appeared to guide them. Everyone worked together and surrounded the Bull Demon King. He tried to escape but was finally defeated and begged for mercy. When Princess Iron Fan saw her husband captured, she was worried and scared, and her heart softened. She held the real banana leaf fan in both hands, walked up to Wukong, and said softly, "Uncle Sun, I was wrong. Take this real fan." Wukong took the fan and said with a bow, "Sister-in-law, don't worry. I only borrow it to put out the fire, and I will return it when I'm done." Princess Iron Fan nodded, tears in her eyes.
Wukong carried the banana leaf fan back to the Flaming Mountains and fanned the blazing fire hard. A strong wind rose, and the flames gradually died down. He fanned again, and the thick smoke cleared. The third fan brought a heavy downpour, and the great fire of the Flaming Mountains was finally put out! A cool breeze blew, and the four travelers cheered. Pigsy was so happy he patted his belly and said, "Finally, it's cool!" Tangseng put his palms together and said gratefully, "Thanks to Wukong's cleverness and bravery, and his persistence, we have passed this trial." Wukong returned the fan to Princess Iron Fan, and the four set off again. Looking back, the Flaming Mountains that once blazed high were now cool and calm. They understood: as long as you think hard and are not afraid of difficulties, you can overcome even the biggest Flaming Mountains.
